Today I came across a wonderful quote that compelled to re-think my priorities and just be grateful for my life!
Learn to love what you have before life teaches you to love what you’ve lost.
There’s a certain irony to life that we only truly recognize once it’s already behind us. The moments we rush through, the laughter we barely pause to enjoy, the love we assume will always be there — these are the very things we one day look back on with longing. We often fail to see the beauty of the present, caught up in the hustle of what’s next, only to realize too late that these were the good old days.
Airports have witnessed more heartfelt goodbyes and genuine kisses than wedding halls ever have. The walls of hospitals have absorbed more desperate prayers than the grandest of churches. It is in these fleeting, raw moments — when love departs, life hangs in the balance, or everything seems to slip away — that we finally understand the depth of what we had. But why does it take loss to truly see value? Why must we experience absence before we fully appreciate presence?
The truth is, we take life for granted. The people, the places, the laughter that fills our rooms — we assume they’ll always be there. We tell ourselves there will be another time, another chance, another day. But one day, that laughter will be a distant memory, a sound we’d give anything to hear again. The places we once hurried to leave will become landmarks of nostalgia, places we drive past slowly, remembering moments we never realized were special at the time.
It is a hard lesson that life teaches in quiet ways — through an empty chair at the dinner table, an old voice message replayed just to hear a familiar sound, a photograph that captures a moment frozen in time. And when we look back, we wish we had held on just a little tighter, cherished just a little more, been a little more present in the now.
But we still have a choice. We don’t have to wait until things become memories to treasure them. We can pause, look up from our distractions, and truly see the people around us. We can laugh fully, love deeply, and appreciate every moment for what it is — a gift. We can learn to embrace today before life teaches us to miss yesterday.
One day, you’ll leave this world behind so live a life you will remember!
– The Nights (Song by Avicii ‧ 2015)
So let’s not let the worries of tomorrow steal the joy of today. Let’s not be so focused on what’s ahead that we forget to enjoy what’s here. Let’s set aside a phones and have a meal with our family taking about the day. Let’s go and meet that old buddy we miss but never find the time. Let’s drop-in on our parents and surprise them (you will never forget the expression on their face!). Because one day, we’ll wish we had loved what we had before it became what we lost. And maybe, just maybe, we can live in a way that leaves us with fewer regrets and hearts full of cherished memories.
